"Lighting the Way" - Church School Program

Our "Lighting the Way" Church School program for grades Kindergarten-6th Grade follows the Multiple Intelligence model as proposed by Howard Gardner. Each person has different ways of learning (i.e. linguistic-verbal, spatial, bodily-kinesthetic) and that each “intelligence” is at varying levels. Therefore, as children rotate between workshops from one week to the next, we provide a rich palette of learning experiences so that the children can become fully engaged with the biblical accounts.

Lighting the Way participants begin in worship with their families. They are dismissed to their workshops duruing the "Passing of the Peace." Children are escorted by their Shepherds or "Keepers" to a specific workshop and stay with them for the duration of the lesson. Keepers help build positive relationships with older adults while creating a loving, nurturing environment. "Teachers" use age-appropriate lessons to engage the children on a given topic.

Each year we focus on one facet of church life (fellowship, covenant, worship, evangelism, discipleship, ministry). Our focus for this year is on the topic of Worship - where do people worship? how? The Biblical stories that we use to help us understand worship are:

  • Israelites wandering in the wilderness
  • The Book of Esther
  • The Nativity through the shepherds eyes
  • Healing miracles of Jesus
  • The Lord's Prayer
  • Saul's/Paul's Conversion
