Made in God’s Image “The purposes in the human mind are like deep water, but the intelligent will draw them out.” -Proverbs 20:5 The Bible imagines God as a being of many passions—loving, angry, jealous, and joyful. And that’s something we can all relate to. But passions and emotions can manifest themselves in ways both good and evil. Some argue that the Church has unjustly stifled our passions, while others claim that it helps us to control them. In either case, by studying the passions intentionally, we can hope to gain a better understanding & mastery of these proverbial angels and demons that live within us. This is a discussion-based course with required readings from a variety of source literature, including short excerpts from articles, essays, scripture, as well as fictional and non-fictional books. The course will also implement other media when appropriate. The topics for discussion are as follows: 1/20/ The Wrath of Achilles 2/10/ Afraid of the Dark (And the Bad Dreams it Brings) 2/24/ Foolish Pride 3/16/ On Love & Lust 3/30/ The Death-Pangs of Grief 4/20/ A Bad Case of Melancholia 5/4/ The Happiest Day of My Life Readings are available in hardcopy in the Atrium, just down the steps from the Sanctuary.
